Metalcess Intelligent offers an Ammonium Leaching process for the production of high-purity zinc cathode (Zn ≥ 99.99%) from Zinc oxide materials, including those derived from ores, concentrates, and Zinc-containing smelting by-products such as zinc oxide dust, electric arc furnace (EAF) dust, off-gas dust, etc. The core technological flow consists of "leaching-purification-electrowinning." This process can be tailored for capacities ranging from pilot-scale to industrial applications.
Large amount of Zinc oxide dusts are produced during the Iron and Steel production, which is of high recovery value. The leaching of ammonia-ammonium chloride provided by Metalcess is a environmental and cost-effective method for it.
For Zinc-Lead combined oxide ore, ammonia leaching is also mostly suggested, during which both Lead and Zinc are leached out, while Iron remains undissolved. Subsequently, Zinc powder is added to the leachate for displacement, causing Lead to precipitate as Lead powder. This process enables the simultaneous leaching of Lead and Zinc while achieving their separation. The Lead powder is of high purity.
The materials can be processed by this methode includes:
Steelmaking Blast furnace dust, also known as bag filters dust, is collected from the dust collection system during the blast furnace smelting process. The dust obtained from the wet dust collection system is called bag filters mud.
Lead smelting slag, zinc oxide fume dust from blast furnace
Zinc smelting slag (containing 8-15% zinc) from rotary kiln volatilization of Zinc hyro-metallurgy residue processing
Zinc oxide dusts from EAF (Electric arc furnace)
Zinc oxide ore
Oxide Zinc Lead ore
Both Zinc oxide dust and second Zinc oxide dust can be treated by this method.
Zinc cathode (Zn ≥ 99.99%)
The technological process of Zinc Ammonia Leaching Method by Metalcess is: Leaching with ammonia and ammonium salt - purification with Zinc powder displacement -elecro-winning. Through this process, high-purity Zinc(Zn≥99.99%) is produced.
Zinc leaching rate: 90-95%
Compared with hot sufuric acid leaching and regular leaching process of Zinc oxide, the Zinc Ammonium leaching methode of processing Zinc oxide has the following advantages:
1) No need of defluorination and de-chlorination treatment
2) No need of Iron removal. The amount of Iron entering the solution is much less than that of other leaching methods.
3) Lowr production cost: high current efficiency with direct current power consumption: 2900-3100 kWh per ton of Zinc.
4) High product quality: Zn> 99.99%. The contents of impurity elements such as C, Cd, Co, Ni, Fe, As, and Sb are all less than 0.0001%, and Pb 0.0003%.
5) Strong adaptability to raw materials, especially capable of handling industrial by-product zinc oxide with high contents of Fe, Al, Pb, Cl and F.
6) Lower Investment on equipment: the leaching and impurity removal are carried out at room temperature, which saves the cost for heating and cooling devices and thus reduces equipment investment. In contrast, the pure NH4Cl solution treatment process requires the entire process to be maintained at a temperature above 50°C; the solution contains less colloids, the leaching residue has better filtration performance, and the operation is simple.
7) Simplied impurities removal process:aluminum, silicon, and other substances in the raw materials do not enter the leaching solution and thus no need for purification.

By Zinc Ammonium leaching process, the leaching is conducted with ammonia-ammonium chloride salt, Zinc oxide, Copper, Cadmium, Cobalt, Nickel and Silver with slight of Iron and Lead dissolve into the solution while most of the Lead, Iron and Magnesium remain in the leaching residue. The Zinc leaching rate can reach 90-95%.

After leaching, the solution is further purified by adding zinc powder to replace the other metal impurities like copper, cadmium, cobalt, nickel and silver. No further Iron removal process like Jarosite/Goethite Precipitation is required any more.

After purification, the solution is sent to Zinc electro-winning process to produce Cathode Zinc(Zn≥99.99%). Graphite anode plate is used instead of traditional Lead alloy anode plate, which can eleiminate the polution of Lead on Zinc product. The Zinc EW system offered by Metalcess is of modular design, easy-installation and cost-saving.The capacity start from 1T/d Zinc.
