Tin Extraction Smelting and Refining

Metalcess Intelligent provides the Tin extraction equipment from Tin ore (Cassiterite) or Tin contained slag to produce high purity 99.95% Tin ingot. The main technological process is " Tin ore reduction smelting- crude Tn fire refining -soldering Tin vacuum distillation - Electric heating spiral crystallizer purification- Tin-slag fuming". Electric furnace, Refining kettles, Vacuum distillation furnace, and spiral crystallizer are mainly involved equipment. The feeding capacity of our Tin smelting plant can be 3tons per day to hundreds of tons per day.

Raw Material for Tin extraction

There are more than 20 kinds of Tin-bearing minerals discovered in the world, yet 99% of the Tin product is produced from cassiterite. Also since Tin is of high recycling value, there are many types Tin slags that can also be recycled to produce high purity (99%-99.99%) Tin product.

Tin Ore, Tin concentrate: Cassiterite (SnO₂), Alluvial Tin, and Tin sand

Tin slag: Tin containing dust, EAF dust, Lead refining slag/dross, harris dross, Tin containing mud, Tin-Lead slurry, caustic dross and etc.

Technological process for Tin extraction

The smelting process of Tin ore cassiterite /Tin slag usually involves: pre-smelting treatment - reduction smelting - crude Tin fire refining; soldering Tin vacuum distillation - rich Tin slag fuming.

Pre-smelting treatment: If the Tin ore /slag contains high grade of Sulfur, Arsenic, Antimony, Lead, Bismuth, Iron, Tungsten and other impurities, puting directly into smelting will lead to increased refining slag rate, decreased direct recovery rate and lower final product quality. Therefore, pre-smelting treatment is necessary. The pre-smelting treatment methodes include beneficiation, roasting and leaching.

Reduction smelting: Under the high-temperature conditions of the smelting furnace, Tin oxide is reduced to metallic tin, while Iron oxide is reduced to iron oxide and combines with gangue components to form slag. The reduction reaction is usually carried out in electric furnaces, blast furnaces, reverberatory furnaces, etc.

Fuming furnace treatment: For high-Tin slag (rich slag), funming furnaces are usually used for volatilization treatment. In the fuming furnace, Tin in the slag volatilizes into Tin oxide and enters the flue gas, which is then collected by the dust collection system. In this way, Tin content in the waste slag is reduced and metal recovery will be higher.

Fire refining: After reduction smelting, crude Tin needs to be refined to produce high-purity Tin. The refining methods include melt separation - condensation - fire refining, vacuum distillation and electrothermal crystallization machine refining. After fire refining treatment, the purity of Tin can reach 99-99.99%.

There are mainly four methods for the pre-treatment of Tin concentrate before smelting:

(1) For Tin ore containing Tungsten, the beneficiation process is suggested.

(2) For high-Arsenic, high-Sulfur, high-Antimony Tin concentrate or high-Iron Tin concentrate, roasting or beneficiation process is required.

(3) For high-Bismuth or high-Iron Tin concentrate, acid leaching method is employed.

(4) For Tungsten-Tin intermediate concentrate, the combination of roasting and leaching is adopted.

Electric furnace smelting has strong adaptability to raw materials. Besides processing concentrates (including roasted sands), it can also handle various returned materials and Tin-containing slags, such as Tin dross, anode dross, electric furnace dust, Tin-containing dust from smelting furnaces, Lead fire refining slags, andetc.

The crude Tin will be further processed with fire refining to produce high purity Tin product.

Impurities such as Iron, Copper, Arsenic and Antimony can be removed in the Tin refining pot.

Vacuum distillation furnace can be used to remove low boiling point metals such as Lead, Bismuth and Antimony from Tin.

High-purity Tin with a purity of 99.95% to 99.999% can be produced by the electric heating spral crystallizer.
