Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)

Metalcess provide electric arc furnace (EAF) for Tin smelting and secondary precious metal group recycling of catalyst plants. For Tin smelting, it has wide adaptability to different Tin materials from Tin ore, concentrate and Tin-containing dross and residue. For catalyst recycling, it is used for the first stage of PMG(precious metal group) concentration from ppm to 2-3% before TBRC processing.

General Introduction

The working principle of the submerged electric arc resistance furnace is to send current into the furnace through electrodes inserted in the slag layer. The current in the molten pool converts electrical energy into thermal energy in the form of resistance heat through the melton metal. It features high thermal efficiency, high total recovery rate of smelted metals, strong temperature controllability, and good environmental performance, and can be used for smelting various metals.

It is widely used in Tin smelting and secondary precious metal recycling of catalyst plants.

The Tin smelting electric furnace belongs to the submerged electric arc resistance furnace, which is a key equipment that uses electrical energy as the heat source to extract metallic Tin by high-temperature reduction smelting of Tin-containing materials (such as tin concentrate, tin slag, etc.).

For catalyst recycling, it is used for the first stage of PMG(precious metal group) concentration from ppm to 2-3% before sending to TBRC furnace.

Applicable materials for processing with EAF:

  • Tin ore / concentrate

  • High-zinc Tin dust

  • Tin smelting slag

  • Tin leaching slag

  • Lead fire refining Tin removal yellow slag, Oxidation slag, Aalkali slag (harris dross)

  • catalyst

Structure and Components of Electric Arc Furnace

1. Furnace Body: The furnace body is lined with refractory materials (such as magnesia bricks and high alumina bricks), which are resistant to high temperatures and corrosion. The furnace shell is made of steel structure, providing good sealing and mechanical strength.

2. Electrode System: The electric arc furnace is equipped with graphite electrodes or self-baking electrodes. The arc length is adjusted by the lifting mechanism to control the temperature.

3. Power Supply System: The power supply system includes transformers, rectifiers, and control systems, providing a stable high current and low voltage power source.

4. Cooling System: Water cooling devices (such as water jackets on the furnace wall and cooling rings for electrodes) prevent damage to the equipment from high temperatures.

5. Exhaust and Collection System: A Tin liquid discharge port is set at the bottom, and a slag discharge port is set on the side. A casting machine or mold plate is provided to collect the liquid Tin.

Advantages of Electric Arc Furnace

Electric furnace smelting utilizes the high temperature generated by electrical energy for Tin reduction smelting. Its main advantages are as follows:

(1) High working temperature (above 1500℃):  which help the capability of smelting those materials difficult to be molten, particularly advantageous for Tin concentrates containing tungsten, tantalum, and niobium.

(2) Less volatilization loss:The volume of furnace gas is approximately 1/16 to 1/18 that of a reverberatory furnace, thus requiring smaller dust collection equipment and resulting in less volatilization loss. Generally, the volatilization rate of tin during electric furnace smelting is about 1.3%, while it can reach up to 5% in a reverberatory furnace.

(3) High productivity rate: 3-6 tons/m2 per day.

(4) High thermal efficiency: 75% to 80%

(5) High recovery rate: It can achieve both reduction and slagging purposes in the same equipment. For low-iron (less than 3%) Tin materials, it can directly produce slag with a Tin content of 0.3 to 1.0%. Therefore, it is more suitable for medium and small-sized Tin smelting plants.
